Up the mountain, take 2

Thursday 2nd April was attempt 2 for looking into volcanoes. This time heading further North (now on our way up Kyushu and Japan) to Mount Aso.

Still cloudy, but not as bad as wednesday, we were not sure how much we would see today, even if at the lower level it still was quite hot.

A bit more touristy as it is, we were expecting to take the cable car up to the top and look into the pits of Mount Aso. But it was not the day... As it has been quite active for over 12 moths and the top is off limits! Still quite impressive tough, with a lot of smoke coming up, it had a certain "Lord of the Rings" feel to it.

After our staple lunch of Onigiri we headed out to the destination, Kumamoto Onsen, where a Ryokan stay, dinner and hot bath awaited us!

And what a great evening it was. This is another onsen town, but with a more traditional feel. Narrow streets and loads of old looking buildings and each riokan/hotel has its own hot baths, and you can use them all, not that we had the time...

So after a stroll on the streets we headed back for our Japanese style wash (at the onsen) and our meal. I must admit I was worried I was going to end up hungry at the start, but the gorgeous meal just kept on coming! 12 different courses, none huge, but all delicious.

So tomorrow we continue North, there is talk of digging holes in sand!?!?
