I miss my bike

Yes, I do know this statement comes as a big surprise for most, but that's me. An addict!

And to add insult to injury, I see loads of them going by every day. People talk about cycling culture in Amsterdam, but I get the feeling that Asia is what we need to look at...

Old and new, lady and tramp, you see all sorts of riders in a variety of bikes, most are just a tool for a job, so cheap and cheerful seems to be the moto.

One of most striking things for me has been sharing of space. Bikes here mix with pedestrians. So you are walking along and a bike might just wizz by when you are about to change direction. You have to keep your senses alert. The locals however seem to be well used to it. I have not seen a single scratch on any part, and I have heard quite a few dodgy brakes!

Parking is also interesting. On street you just pop your bike on it's stand (nearly all bikes here have it) and use the cheapest lock around the rear wheel, some bikes actually have a cheap version of what I knew as the Dutch style of rear wheel lock (that sits behind the rear brake and goes around the rear wheel as a handcuff). Not need to lock it to any street furniture.

There are even paid parking areas that are full!!!

  1. Realmente, pelo que vemos a bicicleta utilitária, é mesmo muito usada. Já tínhamos comentado, entre nós, que 4 semanas sem pedalar iria ser sofrido para ti.
